THE COLOURFUL MAGIC OF GLASS VASES

Lukáš Verner - sklárna Svoboda Karlov

In the heart of the picturesque Czech-Moravian Highlands, not far from the pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelená hora in Ždár nad Sázavou, is a glass factory with thirty years of history and tradition. Silica sand, soda and potash are mixed in a small local furnace and under the hands of skilled craftsmen they become molten glass before being transformed into beautiful and fascinating Glass Rainbow vases. And just like those raw materials, the work of the glassblowers and the work of the grinders intermingle like the substances in an alchemist's flask, so that together they give rise to something enchanting.

During production, master glassmaker Lukáš Verner and his team use traditional techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation, from blowing, shaping, and layering to coloring the glass at high temperature, and at the same time they are experimenting with modern processes. As soon as the vase takes its basic shape, it is the turn of the grinders to give each piece its final shine and precise details. The collaboration between glassblowers and grinders is the key to creating a perfect product. The resulting vases are not only beautiful to look at, but also show the precision of these two traditional crafts.
